An entity creates the Broadcast to plunge the world into an apocalypse, using radio soundwaves to kill most adult humans and infect the rest. The infected turn into mutant creatures referred to as the Dead Listeners.
The children who survive watch as the world is drowned in a fog that bends reality and warps the passage of time. Everyone ages differently. They no longer need to eat or to sleep. And they won't be immune to the Broadcast forever.
As they find ways to protect themselves from the Broadcast, spoken language is abandoned and new ways to communicate are adopted, usually through drawn symbols or makeshift sign language. People travel in small groups or alone. No one knows where they're going, but they know to stay away from the radios.
As a young child, Box was kidnapped by a secret organization for having supernatural abilities. All of his memories were wiped. He was drugged, studied and experimented on. When the Broadcast infiltrated the facility, he broke out along with the other children.
As a child, Box learned how to speak, write and read in English. Except for the latter, he hasn't done these things in a very long time. All of his abilities have to do with the manipulation of sound, which makes him immune to the Broadcast. No one knows this but himself, and he'd like to keep it that way.
